Key Insights: Agriculture Labour Market & Salary Trends

Market trends from Rimfire Resources

Employment Outlook: The Rural Jobs Index reported a decline in advertised vacancies by 18% in 2024, with demand varying across states and industries. Western Australia saw the sharpest drop, while Tasmania bucked the trend with an increase in job postings. Despite these shifts, critical roles in processing, manufacturing, and rural finance continue to experience strong demand.

Remuneration Trends: Rimfire’s Agribusiness Salary Review revealed steady wage growth across key roles and sectors in 2024. While salaries increased, rising costs and economic pressures are influencing how businesses approach compensation, and we’re seeing a shift towards more conservative pay rises.

Disability Inclusion in Agriculture: 52% of agribusinesses provide accommodations for employees with disabilities, demonstrating a growing commitment to inclusivity. However, many businesses still face barriers such as uncertainty around legal requirements, resource limitations, and adapting roles to suit a diverse workforce. With better awareness and support, the industry has the potential to break down barriers preventing people with disabilities gaining employment in agriculture. Rimfire partnered with Ability Agriculture to conduct research into industry perceptions of supported employment in 2024.

We all know unpredictable weather patterns, fluctuating global commodity prices, and international politics can hugely impact agricultural production and employment opportunities. And while the overall picture is mixed, the agriculture industry continues to be a vital employer in Australia, particularly in regional and rural areas.
